UNESCO Campaign - Egypt

With these two stamps, just arrived today, I have now completed the Egyptian series for the UNESCO Campaign to save the monuments of Nubia!!

Coincidentally, this is the 8th and last issue from 1966, depicting both the Great and the Small Rock Temples of Abu Simbel (SG 878-9).

Nubian Monuments - Guinea

These stamps were issued in 1966, overprinted "Centenaire du Timbre Caire 1966". They depict the submerged Nile sphinxes at Wadi es Sebua and a colossal statue of Queen Nefertari.

The original stamps were part of a set of 6 issued in 1964 for the UNESCO Campaign.

Were these two stamps the only ones reissued with an overprint in 1966? If you know, do add a comment :¬)

UNESCO Campaign - Ghana

This lovely colourful set of 5 stamps was issued by Ghana in 1963 for the UNESCO Campaign to save Nubian monuments (SG 319-23).

The stamps depict: the Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel; a colossal statue of Ramses II; rock painting; Queen Nefertari making an offering to the Gods; one of the Sphinx of Wadi es Sebua.

UNESCO Campaign - Iraq

Just got these today: a nice mint set of three stamps from Iraq issued in 1966 for the UNESCO Campaign to save the monuments of Nubia (SG 723-5).

The two lower values show Queen Nefertari while the high value depicts the Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel.

UNESCO Campaign - Maldives

This is a lovely mint set from the Maldives, issued in 1965 for the UNESCO Campaign to save Nubian monuments (Scott #151-8). Four values depict Ramses II and the other four, Queen Nefertari.

Nubian Monuments - Lebanon

This is half a set issued by Lebanon in 1962. It shows a view of the Small Temple of Abu Simbel (SG758-9).

Nubian Monuments - Egypt/China Joint Issue

Joint commemorative issue of Egypt and China, celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. One stamp shows the small temple of Queen Nefertari at Abu Simbel, the other, the South Gate Pavillion in China.

One interesting detail, which may not be quite visible in this picture, is that Abu Simbel has been spelt Abu Simple!!

The Souvenir Sheet, which shows the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China and includes both stamps, was produced in relatively small quantities and is now rather expensive. The stamps are still quite reasonable in comparison.

UNESCO Campaign - Egypt

The 5th issue from Egypt for the UNESCO Campaign in 1963 was was this set of three stamps (SG 754-6).

They all depict monuments of Abu Simbel: the head of a colossal statue of Queen Nefertari; the Great Hall of Pillars and the colossi of Ramses II.

This 1962 stamp depicts the Coronation of Queen Nefertari, from the small temple of Abu Simbel.

It is the 4th issue from Egypt for the UNESCO Campaign (SG 728).

UNESCO Campaign - Nigeria

This is a set of two mint stamps, issued in 1964 by Nigeria for the UNESCO Campaign to save Nubian monuments.

They depict partly submerged colossal statues of Queen Nefertari (SG 145) and Ramses II (SG 146).

A nice mint stamp I recently purchased. Issued in 1964 by the Ivory Coast for the UNESCO Campaign to save Nubian monuments, it depicts the colossal statues of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari (SG 239).

The stamp (SG 628) is the first one issued for the UNESCO Campaign to saveguard Nubian monuments in 1959. It depicts the Rock Temple of Ramses II in Abu Simbel.




The second issue (SG 650) in 1960 depicts the Rock Temple of Queen Nefertari in Abu Simbel.
