UNESCO/Nubian Monuments - Rwanda

These stamps took me a while to source but here they are, fresh from Germany a couple of days ago.

They are part of a set of 8 depicting various aspects of the work of the UNESCO and were issued by the Republic of Rwanda in 1966 on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Organisation.

These are the two stamps I was interested in as they represent the UNESCO Campaign for the preservation of the monuments of Nubia (SG 187 and SG 191).

UNESCO Campaign - Libya

Now I really love this lot, received from different sources over the past couple of weeks.

First day cover issued by Libya on 01 January 1966 for the UNESCO Campaign to save Nubian monuments.

The set of three stamps showing the Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel being protected by a pair of hands (SG 363-5).

The three Souvenir Sheets (SG 363a-365a).

Fujeira Set

This set has everything! I already covered a couple of the stamps in earlier posts but I have now obtained the full set of mint stamps and I thought I would share them with you.

So why did I say this set had everything? Well, first of all, these are really nice, big, colourful stamps which are always an asset to a collection even though they are actually of low value.

But then, in this single set, I also get the Ancient Egyptian theme and my three principal topics: Queen Nefertiti, the Nubian Monuments and the Egyptian Earlies. OK, I admit that last one is a bit of a cheat because it's only commemorating the centenary of the first stamp but still...

So now for the details:
  • SG 57 Bust of Queen Nefertiti
  • SG 58 Colossi of Abu Simbel
  • SG 59 Tutankhamun's Mask
  • SG 60 Sphinx of Giza
  • SG 61 Statues of Prince Rahotep and his wife Princess Nofret
  • SG 62 Ancient Church
  • SG 63 Colonnade of the Great Temple of Isis at Philae
  • SG 64 Nile Sphinxes
  • SG 65 Pyramids of Giza

  • SG MS66 Mini Souvenir Sheet showing SG 64 and 65 as well as the Penny Black and the first Egyptian Stamp

UNESCO Campaign - Egypt

With these two stamps, just arrived today, I have now completed the Egyptian series for the UNESCO Campaign to save the monuments of Nubia!!

Coincidentally, this is the 8th and last issue from 1966, depicting both the Great and the Small Rock Temples of Abu Simbel (SG 878-9).

Nubian Monuments - Guinea

These stamps were issued in 1966, overprinted "Centenaire du Timbre Caire 1966". They depict the submerged Nile sphinxes at Wadi es Sebua and a colossal statue of Queen Nefertari.
The original stamps were part of a set of 6 issued in 1964 for the UNESCO Campaign.
Were these two stamps the only ones reissued with an overprint in 1966? If you know, do add a comment :¬)

UNESCO Campaign - Iraq

Just got these today: a nice mint set of three stamps from Iraq issued in 1966 for the UNESCO Campaign to save the monuments of Nubia (SG 723-5).

The two lower values show Queen Nefertari while the high value depicts the Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel.

Nubian Monuments - Abu Simbel

Here is another one of the Cairo Stamp Centenary Exhibition set issued by Fujeira in 1966 (SG 58) which shows the colossi of Ramses II at Abu Simbel.

Queen Nefertiti - Fujeira

Another classic bust of Queen Nefertiti, from Fujeira this time. It was issued in 1966 and is part of the set commemorating the Cairo Stamp Centenary Exhibition.
Fujeira is one of the former Trucial States on the Persian Gulf (now UAE, United Arab Emirates). Along with Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qiwain, Fujeira signed the Perpetual Maritime Truce Agreement with the United Kingdom, in May 1853; under which they all undertook to give up piracy and the slave trade. In common with other states of the UAE, the Fujeira stamp contract was terminated on 01 August 1972. Any further new issues after that date were unauthorised. UNESCO Campaign - Guatemala

Guatemala, 1966, SG 751. The small temple of Queen Nefertiti at Abu Simbel.

1866 -1966, Centenary of the First Egyptian Stamp

In 1966, Egypt celebrated the centenary of its first stamps. The souvenir sheet above (SG MS873) was issued, depicting the two highest values of the set, #6 and #7.

Fujeira also issued a commemorative set for the Stamp Centenary Exhibition in Cairo. This souvenir sheet (SG MS66) depicts both Egypt and Britain's number 1 (the Penny Black) as well as the two highest values from Fujeira.
